With a total of more than 260 employees, a great deal of know-how and a high level of expertise in all aspects of industrial fermentation processes, the Slovakian site is the scale-up and market launch platform for all of Evonik's major biotechnological products.

Evonik Fermas has been an important production site for Animal Nutrition's bio amino acids  for decades. But the number of pilot and scale-up projects added by Animal Nutrition and other business lines has continued to increase. Since 2020, the Evonik Fermas site has been assigned to the Health Care Business Line as a contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO). This is thanks to the expertise of the Fermas team, which is responsible for upscaling biotechnological processes, i.e., transferring them from the laboratory scale to commercial production. 

In 2022, Evonik Fermas broke ground on the construction of the world’s first commercial production facility for sustainable rhamnolipid biosurfactants, thus cementing its position as a biotechnology scale-up and launch platform. Rhamnolipid biosurfactants are a new platform for life science biosolutions which find application in a broad range of markets from personal care, oral care, health care, nutrition and agriculture to industrial applications in surfaces and catalysis.

Evonik Fermas production includes rhamnolipids, sophorolipids, amino acids, proteins, enzymes, and organic acids produced under cGMP, FSSC22000, ISO 9001, Kosher, and Hallal quality standards.
