Kitchens featuring marble or granite and bathrooms made of quartz are beautiful and elegant, but often unaffordable. Artificial stone is an alternative to expensive original stone from a quarry. Engineered stone, which is almost indistinguishable from natural stone, is conquering the market and posting double-digit growth rates. Artificial stone consists of 90 percent rock powder; the remainder is plastic polymer—and a bit of Evonik.

“0,1percent of the stone consists of silanes. These are adhesion promoters that ensure smooth bonding between the two main components,” explains Daniele Fregonese, the contact person for artificial stone companies at Resource Efficiency. Evonik supplies these companies with DYNASYLAN brand adhesion promoters. “We are extremely innovative, and we cooperate closely with our customers.” If all kitchen counters and wall paneling were made of natural stone, the world’s marble quarries would already be emptied out today. Thanks to silanes, engineered stone is extremely robust and scratch-resistant, water and dirt-repellent, and non-porous. As a result, it’s stain-resistant and easy to clean. Fregonese names yet another advantage: “It also comes in many colors and shapes that would never be possible for natural stone.”
