Evonik supporting search for giant squid.
For more than five years, Evonik is supporting a project by the non-government foundation called Stiftung Rebikoff-Niggeler. The foundation has a submarine that was built exclusively for the purpose of seeking out the legendary Architeuthis squid in its natural habitat and filming it. The centerpiece of the Lula 1000, as the submarine has been christened, is the observation dome made of PLEXIGLAS®, which is a material manufactured by Evonik.
Evonik is a worldwide manufacturer of PMMA products sold under the PLEXIGLAS® trademark on the European, Asian, African and Australian continents and under the ACRYLITE® trademark in the Americas.
What kind of vessel is the Lula1000?
The Lula is a submersible that was specifically developed for exploring the habitat of deep-sea squids.
moreDevelopment of submersibles
Humans have attempted to design diving suits that would extend underwater stays beyond the capacity of their lungs since antiquity.
moreWhat is the purpose of the catamaran ADA Rebikoff?
Although the Lula1000 can move independently at the surface, she is transported within the catamaran ADA Rebikoff over longer distances.
moreRebikoff-Niggeler Foundation
The Fundação Rebikoff-Niggeler was established in 1994 on the Azores island of Faial by the German Joachim Jakobsen.
moreMythical creature
For millennia, the discovery of dead giant squids or the rare encounters with live specimens at the water surface have inspired human imagination.
moreArchiteuthis – what we know today
International research teams are trying to locate and videotape a giant squid in its natural habitat.

What is PLEXIGLAS®?
PLEXIGLAS® is one of the world's best-known synthetic material brands and has become the epitome of acrylic glass.
moreViewing dome for Lula1000
The requirements for the PLEXIGLAS® dome of the Lula1000 are easily summarized: The cockpit has to withstand the enormous pressure of deep water and be invisible under water.

How the giant squid was discovered
Children are more familiar with giant squids in the form of a "giant octopus" that appears in stories, non-fiction books, and cartoons.
moreSquids, octopuses, and their relatives
Although squids and octopuses can swim and breathe underwater like fish and in some cases even have fins, they are part of the mollusk family, making them more closely related to snails than to fish.
moreWhat are submarines?
There is no question that ships and boats float in water. As long as the air in a ship's hold is lighter than the water the ship displaces, it will not sink.
