AEROSIL PLANT IN MOBILE

Building Structure a Mystery

The ground was first broken for the AEROSIL plant back in 1974. One year later, the administration building, including the main entrance, was finished. Today, with more than 700 employees, Mobile is Evonik’s largest site in North America.

The external building structure seems a mystery: At first, it seems unclear what’s behind the concrete architecture. A gas station? Maybe an American diner? That might not be too far wrong. After all, construction took place at the Mobile site in the state of Alabama. The work to construct the AEROSIL plant started back in 1974. One year later, the administration building, including the main entrance, was finished (photo above). The plant was commissioned in December 1976. This saw the return after 58 years of Evonik’s predecessor, Degussa, to open a factory in the USA - its former holding had been confiscated as enemy property after the First World War. Today, with more than 700 employees, Mobile is Evonik’s largest site in North America. In addition to AEROSIL, the products manufactured include the feed additive methionine, the rigid foam ROHACELL, and hydrogen peroxide. The current photograph shows part of the northern section of the two-part factory site which, in total, extends to 730 hectares (1,800 acres).
