Responsible Care

Responsible Care is a global initiative of the chemical industry. The initiative represents continuous improvement of occupational health, environmental protection and plant safety within the chemical industry. Chemical industry associations in almost 60 countries participate in this initiative through their own national Responsible Care programs.

The international initiatives is unifying and committing thousands of enterprizes with millions of workers to go beyond statutory requirements. The overall goals of the Responsible Care initiative are to foster sustainability, promote product stewardship, increase safety at production sites and for local communities, and improve occupational health and environmental protection.

This unique initiative of an entire industry was launched in Canada in 1985 and is now running under the auspices of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA). In Europe, it is coordinated by the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic). In 1991 the German Responsible Care program was launched.

In May 2014, the ICCA Board approved revisions to the Global Charter, focusing on the roles, responsibilities and accountabilites of global chemical companies in support of Responsible Care.

Evonik and its predecessor companies are supporting the Responsible Care principles directly from the start. We regard our commitment to Responsible Care as an integral part of our corporate responsibility.
