Good Health and Well-being

SDG 3:

Challenge:

Over the past decades mankind has made enormous progress in the areas of health and wellbeing. For example, between 1990 and 2015, the mortality rate amongst children under five years of age and the maternal mortality rate have been reduced by half. However, each year, around 6 million children die before reaching the age of five. Recent studies have also shown that although the mortality rate associated with infectious diseases is falling, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are increasing all over the world. The main causes are overweight, unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, and general socioeconomic inequalities (United Nations: The Millennium Development Goals Report 2015, World Health Organization: Global Health Observatory)
Ensuring a healthy life and wellbeing for as many people as possible requires intensive cooperation between many players. Companies are especially challenged: research and development ensure increasingly better active ingredients and drugs, new products can make a contribution towards a healthier life style and sustainable production conditions help effectively reduce air, soil, and water pollution. Employers are also responsible for ensuring health protection, occupational and plant safety as well as integrity of their employees and neighbors of production sites.

Evonik’s contribution:

At Evonik, occupational, plant, and logistics safety are consistently more important than sales and profits. This holistic approach includes employees, the work situation, products, the working environment, and the handling and use of substances. Our safety culture initiative “Safety at Evonik” was established in the Group as a fundamental management approach and provides all employees with reliable behavioral orientation. Extensive safety measures ensure that negative effects from our production for employees, the environment, and the community are kept to an absolute minimum. In the company's health promotion initiative “well@work”, Evonik has introduced long-term programs for exercise, nutrition, stress reduction and prevention of infectious diseases.
Health and wellbeing are also an attractive growth market for Evonik. We are strategic partners of companies that manufacture drugs, dietary supplements, and medical products. Evonik supports these companies with tailored products, technologies, and services – for conventional and also new areas of medical treatment. This includes selective and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients as well as delivery systems which control that the ingredients are released at the required location in the body and at the right time. Materials from Evonik allow degradable implants, which considerably simplify the treatment of bone fractures. Since the implants dissolve biologically in the patient’s body, no further surgical intervention to remove them is necessary. This reduces the costs of treatment and risks of infection.
