High performance polymers for thermoplastic composite matrices.


Fibers give wood its stability and flexibility. Inspired by nature, fiber composites outdo other materials and are appearing in more and more applications. Matrices of PA12, PPA, and HT-polyamides from Evonik and fibers of glass or carbon are used in a fusion impregnation process to produce thermoplastic UD tapes, which are pressed to form high-performance laminates, for example as structural components in automobiles.

Compared with composites made from PA6 and PA66, high-temperature VESTAMID® UD tapes have largely stable mechanical properties over a wide temperature range, and are distinguished by low water absorption. They reduce material requirements, thus allowing more economical design of components and greater safety for heavily loaded component groups.
