"You'll never walk alone" film project

What’s the story behind the song "You'll never walk alone", sung vociferously week after week by tens of thousands of football fans at Liverpool FC, Celtic Glasgow, Borussia Dortmund, St. Pauli in Hamburg, Feyenoord Rotterdam, and Tokyo FC?

The trail will take us through Budapest, Vienna, Liverpool, New York, and, of course, Dortmund. The project will be filmed on a number of locations in Europe and the U.S. It involves procuring many old recordings of films and concerts as well as match footage, and contains interviews with a number of well-known contemporaries and prominent figures from all over the world; the project would therefore not have been possible had not Joachim Król found an additional promoter in Evonik. The finished documentary film is expected to be released in cinemas in early 2017.

The film is a Florianfilm production, supported by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW with additional support coming from BVB’s main sponsor, Evonik. “‘You’ll never walk alone’ is an international hit, familiar to almost everyone, some from football, some from the famous musical,” says Markus Langer, head of Brand Communication at Evonik. “And behind the song is a fascinating piece of 20th century cultural history that every BVB fan should know.” Evonik has already been involved in promoting a project at the interface of football and culture—the book “Man muss ein Spiel auch lesen können” [Reading the Game], which was published by best-selling Author Moritz Rinke. ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is the second film project supported by Evonik, following the film “Junges Licht” [Young Light], set in the Ruhr District, which is currently playing in cinemas to high critical acclaim.
