Research, development and innovation are key elements in Evonik’s strategy of sustained value creation and profitable growth.

Total R&D spending at Evonik was €300 million in fiscal year 2009. Worldwide, around 2,300 R&D employees work at more than 35 locations. Last year, we applied for patents for over 300 new inventions. Our portfolio of patents and pending patents currently stands at more than 24,000, and we have either registered or applied for some 7,500 trademarks.

In order to rapidly bring new research findings to bear within the company, we champion open cooperation with scientists and institutions in a spirit of trust. We have more than 250 partnerships with universities the world over, and in 2009 Evonik invested €10 million in this area.

Products, processes and applications developed in the past five years account for about 20 percent of sales in the Chemicals Business Area. This figure provides impressive proof of Evonik’s innovative power.

Over the last five years, we have spent more than €100 million on the research, development and marketing of new nanomaterials and associated systems in the Chemicals Business Area.
