Walsum Cogeneration Plant

Power supply for public and industrial supply

At the Duisburg-Walsum site, Evonik operates a two-unit Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant. The plant produces not just power but also district heat (which is supplied to the district heating network in the Lower Rhine area), process steam (for the Norske Skog paper mill located near the plant) and compressed air (for the Walsum mine).

History
1928-50	Construction of initial plants for electrical operation of the Walsum pit
1957	Commissioning of the first classic power plant unit (unit 6) with a capacity of 68 megawatts (MW)
1959/60	Commission of units 7 and 8 with 150 MW each
1988	Commissioning of unit 9 (410 MW), decommissioning of units 6 and 8, refitting of the power plant with a common flue gas desulfurization system
1988	Commissioning of one nitrogen oxide reduction system each for units 7 and 9
2004	Official opening/construction of the Precipitated Calcium Carbonate plant of Specialty Minerals Inc. in the building of former generating unit 8

1 pulverized coal-fired Benson boiler – wet ash extraction, slag tap furnace (475 t/h),
1 pulverized coal-fired Benson boiler – dry ash extraction (1,206 t/h),
2 oil-fired auxiliary steam boilers (40 MW),
2 turbine-generator sets (410 MW + 150 MW); equipped for co-generation
