Halle/Westphalia

The Halle/Westphalia site, with about 6,000 square meters of laboratory and office space, is the hub of Evonik's biotechnology research.

It houses facilities for applied research on biotechnology products and processes of Evonik's Health & Nutrition Business Unit. Research focuses on white biotechnology, which is the biotechnological production of products for a wide range of industrial applications, with particular concentration on the development and optimization of fermentation processes.

Core competencies include molecular biology, bioinformatics, metabolism physiology, biochemistry, bioprocess engineering, analysis of intracellular processes, and cellular regulation, as well as analytics for process control and for characterization of fermentation products.

About 100 employees in Halle/Westphalia develop and optimize production processes for amino acids like L-lysine, L-threonine, and L-tryptophan, which are used in animal nutrition as feed additives, and also for other products produced by fermentation. In addition, they work on biotechnological processes for other Evonik business units.

The Halle/Westphalia, site is operated by Baxter Oncology GmbH, the German subsidiary of the global pharmaceuticals producer Baxter International Inc..
