Münchsmünster

Evonik operates an extraction plant for hops and tea at its Münchsmünster site in Upper Bavaria. The extraction plant for decaffeinating tea and extracting hops and other natural products employs about 40 people and is part of Evonik's Advanced Intermediates Business Unit.

At Münchsmünster, Evonik uses a special extraction process employing supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) at high pressure to remove caffeine and any possibly harmful substances from tea while nearly fully retaining the constituents that give it its flavor and health-promoting properties. Compared to traditional methods, this process is particularly gentle, easy on the environment, and efficient with resources.

The tea decaffeination plant at the Münchsmünster site has received International Food Standard (IFS) certification from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Qualität (German Society for Quality).
